1 THESSALONIANS‬ ‭4‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭‬‬

“Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.”
‭‭

1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It is completely understated how important it is to live a quiet and productive life. For Christians, it ought to be received as a recipe for success. Instead, in western Christianity and at large, the sister concepts of working with your hands and living a quiet life are seen as restrictive and boring. They are often exchanged with prejudice for the more titillating concepts of the ease and constant stimulation. For Paul, this is played out in Thessalonica in sexual immoral behavior and pursuits. Certainly this is still true today. Our culture is inundated with a constant barrage of indoctrination to this end, wherever success is wanted. After all, sex sells. This shouldn’t be so for Christians. Just as sex is the culmination of a hard working and committed relationship, everything is part of a holistic system that is not the end goal but only a blessing of a proper journey. Our proper goal should be neither ease nor comfort nor quiet nor peace. It should be a life well lived before God. Living a life that doesn’t seek these things as an end goal but a means to an end will help us attain it.
