ABOUT THE MUSIC

After I had played some simple sketches of Rumors and Monster for my wife, she commented on the inherent darkness of the album. This was, of course, not a surprise to me as the album was written to showcase the emotionally difficult burden of being God to a sinful and fallen creation. But as I noodled it, I felt that something was missing.

Into the Sun is meant to offset the darkness a little bit. For all of the unaddressed reality of man’s sin and God’s emotional depth, it is important to remember that his grace abounds in spite of our sin. With God, we must remember that there is an inherent hope that comes with everything he does. For those he loves, victory is always one step away.

This song showcases that journey and plea. It speaks of a hope that a toxic relationship can be overcome by the strength of God’s character.

Interestingly, this is the only song of the album to reference God in such a bold way when the narrator says he is being “nailed to a cross.” To the casual listener who listens in a single play thru, this song is meant to end the journey that started with a broken heart in Rumors with a hopeful heart here. The hope is that as the listener hears that line, they then realize that the sad and lonely reject was always actually God.
